In addition to research about their contribution in all applications of the whole plant (antirheumatic, depurative, against diarrhoea and other diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems...) nettles roots and nettle seeds are studied in modern research because they contain a lectin named UDA (Urtica dioica agglutinin) with anti-prostatic, anti-fungal and insecticide properties that has also shown in vitro anticancer and powerfully HIV-virus inhibiting properties. Recent studies have confirmed that steroids and lignans from the nettle root are active to counteract evolution in prostate cancer. It has turned out that nettle roots drop the frequency of nocturia and the quantities of residual urine and can, in case of prostate hypertrophy, reduce by 70% the volume of the prostate; without corresponding to a permanent cure, it means nonetheless a significant comfort increase. To enhance the effect it is recommended to combine nettle root with saw palmetto extract or pumpkin seeds. Note that to be effective the treatment should be extended and that the effects are felt only after several weeks. Other applications: foot baths with nettle roots provide effective aid in cases of vaso-constrictions and in cosmetic use whole plant or root decoctions are known to improve the health of hair and scalp.
